Pat McAfee Vs GUNTHER Set for WWE Backlash – A major showdown has been made official for WWE Backlash, as Pat McAfee will face GUNTHER in a high-profile singles match.
The announcement was made during the April 28 episode of WWE RAW at the T-Mobile Center in Kansas City, Missouri. McAfee, still seething from the attack by GUNTHER on the RAW After WrestleMania episode, stood atop the announce table to deliver a passionate message. McAfee reminded the WWE Universe of his roots, declaring that while he may have become a massive success behind the microphone, he’s never forgotten who he is or where he came from — the East Hills of Pittsburgh.
“I was not handed a damn thing,” McAfee told the crowd. “I’ve got great friends, and I’ve worked my ass off for everything I have. When I’m gone, I hope they say I was a loyal motherf***er.”
McAfee turned his attention to his longtime ally Michael Cole, defending him from GUNTHER’s recent actions. “If you’ve got something with Cole, then you’ve got something with me,” McAfee warned. He expressed no regret for confronting GUNTHER and said, “If he dies, he dies.”
Seeking retribution, McAfee demanded SmackDown General Manager Nick Aldis lift GUNTHER’s suspension and allow them to fight. Aldis refused to lift the suspension outright, citing the value of both men, but instead offered a sanctioned match at Backlash in St. Louis. Without hesitation, McAfee accepted.
This match will mark McAfee’s first official WWE bout since the 2023 Royal Rumble and comes against a dominant former Intercontinental Champion in GUNTHER, who held the title for a record-setting reign before losing it to Jey Uso at WrestleMania 41.
WWE Backlash takes place on Saturday, May 4, live from the Enterprise Center in St. Louis, Missouri. The McAfee vs. GUNTHER clash now joins a growing lineup of marquee matches for the event.
