Samoa Joe Discusses Possible Retirement – Former AEW World Champion Samoa Joe recently appeared on Insight with Chris Van Vliet, where he spoke about his future in professional wrestling. Joe acknowledged that retirement is on the horizon and suggested that his current AEW contract might be his last.
Why He Signed with AEW
Joe revealed that after his departure from WWE, there was initial interest from the company in bringing him back. However, he had already begun discussions with AEW and ultimately felt that the company was a better fit.
“I think the biggest thing was at first, when I left WWE, I just signed my deal with Twisted Metal. There was initially a little bit of interest again from WWE and maybe redoing it, but at that point, I had started talking with AEW. So speaking with Tony and understanding kind of what he was looking to do at the time, and really being able to work out with my filming schedule, it just was a really nice fit.”
On Retirement and His Career Ending
Joe admitted that he frequently thinks about retirement and believes it will come “sooner rather than later.” He noted that wrestlers from his generation are more conscious about not overstaying their welcome in the business.
“Yeah, I do a lot. It’s probably coming sooner than later, which is fine. I think a lot of people from my generation, from what I’ve seen, if they have the ability, we’ve done our best to kind of save up, and we definitely don’t want to outstay our welcome because we may have been privy to a few people who may have done that in their careers. So I definitely don’t want to be that guy in mine.”
Whether He Has a Retirement Date in Mind
Joe clarified that he doesn’t have a set retirement date but suggested that his current contract’s expiration could mark the end of his in-ring career. He also pointed out that wrestling retirements rarely last.
“No, I think it’s just really based on when my contract runs out. I think exploring those options as they go. I hate just saying retirement because how many pro wrestling retirements never stick? All of them. So yeah, I will do this for a little longer, and then yeah, I think the end is probably sooner than any new deal being signed.”
Joe’s comments suggest that while he remains committed to his AEW run, he is already considering life after wrestling. With his work in television and film, including Twisted Metal, it’s possible he may transition to a full-time career outside the ring in the near future.
